Everyone wants to simplify things around them; want many things to be automated and hope everything is taken care of by default. Have you ever thought of such things for building websites? Meaning, no programming required, no HTML tags to worry about (if you do not know how web pages are rendered, it is via HTML) and styling of web pages to take care… Really, is there such a system? Vola!!! Content Management System at your service…. CMS (as it is generally called) is used to manage the content of a website. It basically has the abilities to provide different permission levels to multiple users to manage data or information of internet / intranet applications. (Looks a bit too serious?! Well, lets make it bit lively)
When using CMS based websites, you can work on the website without going into the programming of your site. It might include managing videos, catalogs, photo galleries and much more. Dependency on the web development company for regular updates reduces drastically. But first things first.... In this Basic StoryBoard blogs, we will try to read about very basic stuff ie. if you are a newbie to this web world (which of course you are not, but would want to read further to improve your understanding). Lets take a general example into consideration:
When we "browse" the Internet, we generally hear people talking about "webpage". Each time the screen reloads, we're on a new "page". This, you may assume is analogous to books, which you'll have to forget it if you want to really want to understand the making of a website. We could say books and websites are different ball games altogether (something like Mars and Venus? No, no not that different).
In most books, almost everything on each page is unique, including the page number. Though the header and the footer are the only repeating elements. Everything else is the content. "Writing a book" means putting together a single stream of words (which makes some sense) that will start on the first page and continue till the end of the last page (for few, the book may sound to be ancient with the Tabs and Kindles around).
A website has a header and footer too, but let's consider the other elements which you see in any website you visit: menus, sidebars, article listings, more. These elements are not the actual content of the website. Imagine if you had to recreate the menu separately on every page! You would probably forget about the website completely or if you were smart enough, take a template of the page and copy it every time you need it… So, here enters the (No, not the Terminator, you are missing the whole point)
Content Management System. It lets you focus on making new content for your website. You can write the article which you want to upload it to your site (and hope the visitors to the website like it, just like we are hoping you will like ours), and let the CMS worry about the layout for the webpage: your article plus the menus, sidebars, and all the fixings.
Since the amount of information being uploaded on the internet increases exponentially every day, the necessity for CMS has multiplied several times. It is a boon for everyone who wants to spinoff simple websites within a short span of time. Snap your finger and the website is ready to be served, all thanks to CMS (the genie which fulfills all your wishes)! You can easily modify the content whenever you need, keep the website up-to-date in a simple way and also find the required information from the database by searching keywords. It also allows improving a website’s search engine ranking. (Don't break your head about it for now) All this helps in retaining as well as gaining new visitors to the site.
